Welcome to the Family
Congratulations on wanting to get your child baptised at St Francis!
Baptism is another name for christening, and we’d love to help you get ready for baptising your child, and helping them (and you) then grow in your Christian faith.
Joining our Family
Baptism is about joining the church family. In order to be part of a family we need to spend time with each other! So we’d love you to get to know us a bit, and us you, as we prepare to baptise your child. We have lots of services and events geared towards families so come and join us at some of those so you get an idea what the church family is like, and can be sure that you would like to become part of the family! Once you’ve done that and are sure you’d like to go ahead we’ll take the next step with you
Baptism is the first step on a journey of faith
You and your godparents will be promising to bring up your child in the Christian faith. And so we’ll be encouraging you to grow in your own faith as you commit to sharing it with your child. That starts off with a couple of short sessions of baptism preparation, and after the baptism we’ll explore further with you how we can help you discover more about the life changing love of God.
Start as you mean to go on
Start praying for and with your child now! It’s never too early to start praying with and for your child. You could use the hand prayer to help you.
Thumb: make a thumbs up sign and say thank you for something!
Index: point into the distance and ask God to guide you
Middle finger: pray for important people in the world
Ring finger: pray for people you love
Little finger: pray for people who need God’s help
Baptisms as an Adult
You are never too old to be baptised, and being baptised as an adult is a fantastic experience. If you have already been baptised when you were a child, or in a different Christian tradition, there are special ways to renew your commitment and promises to God.
Tips for Godparents
Godparents should be baptised, as well as being practicing Christians themselves – they have an important role to play in accompanying your child in their journey of faith, so they need to be on that journey themselves! It’s usual to have 3 godparents, and certainly at least 2.
Arranging a date for the big day!
Once you’ve decided you would like to be part of the church family and have done some baptism preparation, you’ll be ready for the big day! We will make sure the service is a really special one as you join with the church family in bringing your child for baptism.
